BRIEF ONE - NATURA - PLANT RESEARCH

A range of indoor plants and cacti were purchased as part of the project, all require a low level of maintenance to be maintained which is a desirable attribute for consumers as discovered while collecting research. Additionally, plants were also chosen for their attributes such as their aesthetics or ability to clean air.

The list of plants that were purchased for the project are listed below;

LIST OF PLANTS & CACTI;
  • Yucca Plant.
  • Cheese Plant.
  • Maranta Prayer.
  • Dragon Tree.
  • Acre Palm.
  • Aloe Vera.
  • Ruby Ball Cactus.
  • Barrel Cactus.
  • Spurge Cactus. - Find real name.

Once a range of plants had been purchased I decided to research into the specifics of each one and collect a body of information relevant to the consumer and the upkeep of the plant. The selected information will be summarised and featured in the company look book.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION;
  • Latin/botanical Name.
  • How often to water.
  • Light conditions.
  • Place of discovery.
  • Health benefits.
  • Any additional relevant information.

Yucca Plant.

Plant image;

Plant information;
  • Botanical name - Yucca elephantipes.

  • Position - A bright position it will take direct sun. Or a bit of shade but spin it around fron time to time or the branches will lean towards the light.

  • Temp - Pretty hardy it will stand being in all but the coldest conservatories.
  • Water - Keep well watered in summer and infrequently in winter. The more you water it over the summer the faster it will grow. Its always best (and important over winter) to let the plant dry out before watering again.
  • Feeding - A liquid feed every 3 weeks or so over summer (Less if you want to restrict growth)
  • Tip- Use a free draining compost. It can be put outside over the summer months.
  • Yuccas are pretty well known easy house plants, tolerating full sun and thriving on a minimal amount of care.
  • Place of discovery - Central & South America.
  • Level of care - Easy.

Cheese Plant.

Plant image;

Plant information;
  • Botanical name - Monstera delicosa.
  • Position - Bright indirect light to bright shade.
  • Temp - Average warmth.
  • Water - Water well in the growing season. Let the compost dry out slightly between watering. Mist frequently.
  • Feeding - A liquid feed every month or so over the growing season.
  • Tip - If water drips from the leaves then it has been over watered, let the compost dry and water less.
  • Cheese plants originate from the rain forrest where they climb up trees to reach higher light levels, consequently sturdy support is essential as stems can reach a height of 20' or more.
  • Place of discovery - Central & South American Rain forests.
  • Health Benefits - A good all round air cleaning properties and particularly effective in humidifying air conditioned interiors.
  • Level of care - Easy.

Maranta Prayer.

Plant image;

Plant information;
  • Botanical name - Calathea.
  • Position - Light shade in summer. Brighter in winter but keep out of direct sun, this will dull the colour of the leaves, and could be fatal!
  • Temp - Keep warm minimum of 16°C / 60°F.
  • Water - Keep well watered in summer, Caltheas love high humidity mist when you can and keep the compost moist in the summer. Brown tips show that the humidity is too low.
  • Feeding - Feed with a very weak solution when you water. Don't give it a strong feed every now and then.
  • Tip - Do not repot too often and use a peat based compost.
  • Place of discovery - South America.
  • Level of care - Easy.

Dragon Tree.

Plant image;

Plant information;
  • Botanical name - Dracaena marginata
  • Position - Bright shade.
  • Temp - Average warmth.
  • Water - Do not let the compost dry out, in the growing season keep moist and reduce the watering in winter. Keep the humidity up with misting (Dracaena draco will tolerate dry air).
  • Feeding - A liquid feed every month or so.
  • Tip - Keep the humidity up to stop leaf drop. Place in a pebble tray to increase humidity.
  • Place of discovery - Madagascar.
  • Level of care - Easy.
  • Health Benefits - The Dragon tree is one of the plants featured on NASA's air filtering plants list.
  • Easy foliage houseplant with thin variegated leaves. A great plant for kitchens.

Areca Palm.

Plant image;

Plant information;
  • Botanical name - Chrysalidocarpus lutescens
  • Position - Bright indirect light to bright shade.
  • Temp - Average warmth. Best if it does not get too cold over the winter.
  • Water - Water really well in the growing season little over winter. Misting occasionally will help the leaves to look their best.
  • Feeding - A palm food appled every month or so over the growing season.
    Tip - If any stems begin to die remove ASAP to stop any rot infecting the healthy stems adjacent. Avoid placing next to radiators.
  • Place of discovery - Madagascar.
  • Level of care - Easy.
  • Health Benefits - The Areca palm is one of the top plants featured on NASA's air filtering plants list.
  • Easy foliage houseplant with thin variegated leaves. A great plant for kitchens.

Aloe Vera.

Plant image;

Plant information;
  • Botanical name - Aloe Vera.
  • Position - A bright position, it will take direct sun although full sun all day in the summer will scorch the leaves.
  • Temp - Keep warm minimum of 16°C / 60°F above 70° in summer will promote faster growth.
  • Water - Leave it alone! if its damp at all do not water it. Try to use pre boiled water as it hates lime. Water far less over the winter and do not worry about misting.
  • Feeding - Feed at about a quarter of the usual dilution one a month over the growing season.
  • Tip - Cut slices from the bottom leaves to use yourself, there is more of the active chemicals in these. Slice across the leaves and rub onto skin, when the juice stops flowing score the edge of the slice to break more cells and reapply.
  • Place of discovery - North Africa.
  • Level of care - Easy.
  • Health Benefits - The Aloe Vera plant is one of the top plants featured on NASA's air filtering plants list.
  • Noted for its healing properties the Aloe vera plant is very popular in everything from cosmetics to medicinal uses. Apart from this it is also a great houseplant, easy to look after, oxygenates the air and looks great.

Ruby Ball Cactus.

Cactus image;

Cactus information;
  • Botanical name - Gymnocalycium mihanovichii
  • Position - The Gymocalycium tops are tolerant of more shade than many cacti and dislike direct sunlight. By contrast, the stock green cacti on the bottom are often light-lovers. Look for a bright area, but not so bright that the cap begins to wash out.
  • Temp - Average warmth.
  • Water - Allow the soil mix to become nearly dry between waterings, but then water thoroughly. Immaculate drainage is essential, so never let the pots sit in water. Suspend watering in the winter, but mist occasionally.
  • Feeding - During the growing season, fertilise with a cacti fertiliser mix. Suspend feeding during the dormant winter period.
  • Tip - Ruby Ball Cacti prefer a drying period between waterings, even to the point where they slightly wilt. When you water, however, you should water deeply. The plant will noticeably plump up.
  • Place of discovery - South America.
  • Level of care - Easy.

Barrel Cactus.

Cactus image;

Cactus information;
  • Botanical name - Echinocactus Grusonii.
  • Position - Plenty of sunshine will keep this cacti more than happy. In a glass room you may have to provide some shade during a hot summers day to prevent sunburn.
  • Temp - Temperatures averaging 50°F/10°C - 75°F/23.8°C are ideal but not below 40°F/5°C and avoid frost.
  • Water - From spring until fall; water similar to many other house plants by watering when the soil begins drying. Before and during winter barely water the plant. Overwatering, especially when the temperature becomes cold can rot this species.
  • Feeding - Feed every 4 weeks with a high potassium fertilizer during summer.
  • Tip - The cactus naturally grows in low fertility areas so their nutrient needs are low. Fertilize the barrel cactus once a year in spring when it leaves dormancy and begins growing again.
  • Place of discovery - Mexico.
  • Level of care - Easy.

Spurge Cactus.

Cactus image;

Cactus information;
  • Botanical name - Euphorbia aeruginosa.
  • Position - The plant looks as though it will take all the sun you can provide for it, but in fact it prefers light shade.
  • Temp -  50°f. (10°c) is a good average temperature. The plant is said to be able to stand some frost for a short time, but this is not advised.
  • Water - The species makes most of its growth in summer (this may sound an obvious statement, but many plants including species of Euphorbia make some or all of their growth at other times of the year). It can be watered freely in the summer months, but kept relatively dry at other times and perfectly dry if the winter is cold.
  • Feeding - During the growing season, fertilise with a cacti fertiliser mix. Suspend feeding during the dormant winter period.
  • Tip - Euphorbia aeruginosa prefer a drying period between waterings.
  • Place of discovery - South Africa.
  • Level of care - Easy.
